slight valve tapping when starts cold

starts fine runs fine.. but has this slight valve tapping sound coming from the engine... what would cuase this??? but goes away when warm..


im completly new to 4.0 explorers..

What weight oil is he running? Sounds like it's getting low oil psi on cold start. Does it do it once it's been warmed up, shut off and restarted?

My bet is that its dry up top, my mom's '00 X does the same thing and its a 5.0 AND my GF's 02 VW Beetle does it; never heard one that doesn't.

If it's a 4.0 SOHC motor it's normal t-chain slap noise. There used to be a recall for a new t-chain tensioner if you have a vin I can run it and check to see if it's still open on yours.

I had a 88 5.8 did the same thing-I used a product called militec in the oil i went away for almost 2 years
