Ruh-Roh, The First Chevy Volt Destroyed In Crash

Ruh-Roh, The First Chevy Volt Destroyed In Crash

On Friday, Dec. 3, a 24-year-old woman was cited for failing to stop in a safe distance after she rear-ended a vehicle stopped and waiting to make a left turn from North Bridge Street into the Linden Free Methodist Church parking lot. Linden police office Gary Conklin said the woman told the responding officer that she dropped her cell phone and as she reached for it, struck the rear of a 2011 Chevy Volt, driven by a 44-year-old man. The woman’s 2-year-old son sustained minor injuries, as his head struck the back of the front seat of her 2005 Ford Explorer. Conklin said the boy was in a safety seat; however, the seat was apparently defective. The Volt was towed from the scene. Conklin urges all motorists to avoid distractions while driving. If a driver drops a cell phone, he advises them to not reach for it until they have safely stopped the vehicle. Causing a crash by being distracted could lead to a citation for reckless driving.

Ironic that a cell phone was involved.

nope... probably needed a toothpick and mouthwash to get the taste of the Volt out of its grill....

Hehehe...I like that.

There's also something wrong that a 44yo MAN was driving the volt and a chick was driving the sploder.

The cell phone use wasn't involved. I'd have gone for my Big Mac in the same way she went after that cell phone.....

Blame the user, not the device!

^^^Fair enough...but they do seem to be a relatively common thread in accidents. And as I've said before, a vehicle should be held with waaaaay more maturity and responsibility. It's a couple ton bullet, and when penalties for driving and doing idiotic stuff are similar to those of gun laws, I'll get off the cell phone bash. You blame the user for gun mishaps, why not car mishaps...and if they're penalized accordingly, I bet folks will start getting the point...which should be 'get off the damn cell phone while driving'.

Yeah don't get me wrong. I do everything I can to avoid using the dang thing when driving - it's a clear distraction. I'm just saying that for others, motivation to distract may come in the form of a greasy burger or over stuffed grilled burrito. :D

^^^Gotcha...I think we're saying the same thing, I was just pushing more accountability. If she were drunk, everyne would be saying 'string her up'...personally, I don't see the difference between drunk driving and cell phone driving. A distraction is a distraction, I know their are exceptions and accidents do happen, but had there not been a cell phone involved here, there would have been no accident.

I was flipping through the channels a few weeks ago, and happened across a show covering accidents (may have been Weatherchannel)...and IIRC, they said cell phones were the current number one cause of accidents at about 33% followed by 25% attributed to alcohol and 20% attributed to drug use. Now we all know how stats can be skewed, but it skews them in my favor, so I'm gonna use them...haha.

Ben... you and me are cut of mostly the same cloth.

If there's an over-stuffed grilled beef, rice, & bean burrito near the pedals or a triple quarter pounder with cheese, is it really going to stay by the pedals long? :D

Its a pricy ticket in WA driving while talking/texting on a cell phone these days.

^^^Same here...but it's not enforced. As I've mentioned before, this was first applied to ONLY teenage drivers while I was in highschool, and in the first 5 years, 24 tickets were issued statewide. I figured that would be a huuuuuge revenue maker...but they say it's difficult to actually determine use. I don't see what's so difficult, if you see someone with their arm in the air, and their hand on their ear, talking...chances are good you've found someone. And if a cop can spot that I don't have a seat belt on from an on ramp at dusk, I think they can handle this.

in WA if they pull you over for say speeding the judge ALWAYS gives you the option to plea down to either a seatbelt or cell phone infraction..IMHO it is just a way to pad the numbers for a yearly report on effectivness of those 2 laws..
