Removing fan on 96 Grand Marquis

How on God's green earth do I get the dern thing off?!

Are you talking about the fan clutch? If so, it is threaded onto the water pump. The 97 Aerostar was a left-hand thread. I had to get a strap wrench to hold the other side still while loosening the clutch.

Yep, I'm actually questioning if it needs replacing, but my first work on the agenda is the water pump. I'm going to have to go back to it and have another look. Apparently, there is a special tool set used for removal - I have said tools but no instruction on how to use them.

I'll check my tool collection to see if I have a strap wrench.

They make a fan removal tool to hold the pulley while you use a wrench to loosen the fan. Last time I did one I did not have the right one to hold the pulley so I heated the fan with a torch and spun it off with a wrench. I probably would not recommend doing that unless you feel very comfortable using a torch. I know the mechanic who saw me do it freaked out which I didn't understand why. I think he was more annoyed when it actually worked.
