This is my '97 Ranger, got about 250k on the clock. Threw the light yesterday morning, been through maybe 6 restarts since then and it's still on. Autozone tells me the code means "Evaporative Emission Control System- large leak detected." Gas cap seemed tight, and nothing related to that system has been touched for 10k+ miles.

Last summer, it threw the same code. I found the hose that comes out of the EVAP canister to be badly dry-rotted, and replaced it with low-pressure gas line, clamped on both ends. That seemed to cure the problem until yesterday, and looks like it's still there and in good shape.

Any troubleshooting suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Danged light went off when I just went to the bank. :headbang:

Last time, it shut off after a day or two, then came back on a day or two later...

Sounds like you're in for a solenoid. Many of those come with related hoses when you buy them from the dealer.

Check the hose that goes from the manifold to the canister, it'll have a black plastic sensor and a solinoid valve in line. Remove that line and check for any blockages or breaks, make sure the sensor is clear, check the solinoid to see if theres any contamination like charcoal in it, remove it and tap it on a rag see if anything comes out, if charcoal comes out of it replace the canister and soliniod with a new sensor, if nothing comes out i'd change the sensor first. You can also power up the soliniod to see if it opens, put 12volts to the pin the red wire is on and ground the other side, if it doesn't open replace it. See this code often on older rangers. Hope this helps some.

OK...

It all looked good except the rotten hose last time, but I'll see what I can find now.

The local dealer mentioned that the part sells for about $125 (solenoid, valve, and hoses together is the only way they come). Can I run it for a week or two if I order the parts from somewhere? Or is this something I really should get taken care of ASAP? Truck runs about as well as it ever does (Dad's old Focus ran very poorly when it was throwing this code).

Thanks!

IF it's not running poorly now you can probably get away with driving it awhile.
