Got a pic of the rig or a VIN from the frame? Could be the old case of a swapped door at some point.

F26 = F250 4WD Pickup.

S = 400 2V

U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant.

EG4160 = 1979.

1979 serial number range: DC0,001-FK9,999.

1978 serial number range: AE0,001-CK9,999.

Note: Serial numbers apply to ALL series trucks, Bronco's and Econolines, not just to F100/350's or F Series trucks.

But most people are unaware of this. One guy on t'other site posted his VIN, wanted to discover what specific F100/350 preceeded/came after his on the assembly line.

He wanted fellow members to compare their VIN's with his...hoping that one would have the 6th serial number digit plus/minus 1. When I read that jazz, I laughed so much I damn near fell oughtta the chair.

When I told him 500,000 + vehicles would be involved and it could be a C Series Tilt Cab, an LNT9000, Bronco or whatever...he was flabbergasted!

I told him if he wanted to know, contact martiauto.com and pass along his VIN. When I added that Marti charged a fee for this service, the conversation ended abruptly.

He wanted to know, but was too cheap to spend a few measly dollars to find out.

Thanks Bill. I meant that I thought it was funny that my truck was close in serial number to his and his was built in Kentucky and mine was built in Oakville

Considering that that ONE character of the plant code changes the VIN# nevermind the other characters ,people should undertand just how many vehicles could get made in one year.

Alot of good info, helped me on mine also, but the page isnt showing up the body codes, mine is SD4. anyone know what that means? I found out all the rest with his links. also the special order section wasnt showing up, my special order numbers are 46

(1978) BODY code SD4: SD = Red all Vinyl-Bench Seat-Explorer // 4 = Ranger Cab w/Styleside Pickup Box.

Since 46 is not a special order number, your truck was not a special order. 46 refers to this:

DSO code 46: Indianapolis IN Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

If the DSO code is composed of 6 numbers, the last 4 refer to a Domestic Special Order.
