of course a question about 1974 f100 w/ 360

First Post, of course it is a question.

I've always been a mopar man, however I just picked up a 1974 f100 4x4 automatic for a few hundred bucks. Pretty solid truck, however I am unfamiliar with fords. My question is:

What automatic tranny fluid would you run in this old of truck? I'm going to drop the pan, see if there is a filter? and replace the fluid for good measure. I'm not sure of the transmission? It is mated to a 360, and I am sure it is a 3spd auto. Let me know what kind of tranny fluid it takes.

thanks

Type F and you'll be fine. I actually do believe Type F is what is recommended until the later 70's for a C6.

C4's = F type

C6's = Dexron II

If you must be absolutely right, check the dipstick..the type of fluid required it is stamped right on it

Thanks fellas. Checked the dipstick, but too much rust, and could not make out words half-way up. I'm sure typeF will be fine. Appears many oil companies make it. Another question? How many quarts to fill, if I drop the pan? Does this year have a screen or filter? I know, I know too many questions. i'll put a pic up later, though it could not compete with any of your trucks. Just an old ranch truck, that looks like an old ranch truck.

Don't worry about the questions, that's what this site is for. For the record, all I've ever ran was Type F in my C6's, and they have yet to blow up. I dunno if anything changed from year to year, but the C6's in my later 70's trucks have screens. As for how much fluid they'll take...depends on if you're doing the torque converter as well. IIRC, if you include the TC, it's right at 13quarts...I've never not drained the TC when I did it, but I'd guess somewhere around 8-9qts if you don't drain it.

C6's as a rule take Dexron II, Dexron III or now Mercon.

Perhaps the early one took Type F.

I'll check my books

C4's required Type F

Type F for power steering

C4's = F type / C6's = Dexron II
Depends on the year, kiddo.
Dennis, have you been smoking something? Or are you asleep at the switch...after you were up all night with a tummy ache from eating too many Alberta pears?

1964/76 C4 & 1966/76 C6: Type F ATF

1977 and later C4 and C6 = MERCON.

Only Ford-O-Matic, FX, FMX, and MX Cruise-O-Matic's used Type F from day one.

This info came right oughtta the 1973 and later car/truck parts catalogs.

Go to TEXT = PAINT SECTION, scroll down to MOTOR OILS & LUBRICANTS. Look for Ford part number: XT-2QDX (MERCON) and the year it was first used (1977).

question..whats the difference in say a 76 and a 78 c6 that one would use type f and the other mercon?

I don't know this for certain, but often times when they come out with a new fluid they make it backwards compatible so that the dealers can stock as few fluids as possible. It is completely possible that nothing in the trans changed and they just wanted to minimize the different types of fluid required.

This chart doesn't tell much of anything, all it lists is part numbers, so...

C1AZ19582A is Type F

D7AZ19582A was later replaced by XT-2QDX = MERCON.

Yes, I was planning to last night, but after eating two huge tri-tip B-B-Q sub sandwiches, I fell asleep. :rotz:

Just like you, Dennis...I didn't get this big by starving myself. :rofl:
