New truck, a little help would be appreciated. 79 f250 400 carb auto 2wd

I've just gotten a Ford F250 custom with a carburetor 400 2wd auto power steering and the long box. It was a coincidental buy, my old vehicle died, and this showed up very cheap when I needed it. But cheap does mean problems, and this guy has many.

I've already gotten my Chilton and have been working on things I know and figuring out the things that have been done or undone as someone has made a bit of a mess of things.

My biggest issue is the steering, it seems to have 2-3" of play in the steering wheel and can't find much as to how to fix/adjust that or if I just replace the steering box.

My exhaust is messy with the cat looking original, a similar sized cylinder 6" past it, and the end 1/3 of the under side is split open, and finally the tail pipe goes all the way back to where the pipe is broken and the muffler is gone.

And of course there are leaks in the tranny, power steering, and engine, but nothing I can't keep up with.

This truck reads at about 67,000 original, with 12,000 additional, and was used almost exclusively as a tow rig with a bed camper in. That also meant that for many seasons, it was parked and left indefinitely.

All of that being said, I could use all the help and advice that any of you could provide, though keep in mind I'm poor so the cheaper the better.

Oh, and hi everyone, I'm Tyson. This is my first post, I've been reading the forums for about 2 weeks now. This is my first Ford, first truck, and my first cabed vehicle, and couldn't be more excited. Thanks all and have a great day.

Welcome to the site Tyson. Chances are, it's time to replace alot of parts under the front end to try to eliminate the slop. Lift up the front end, have a buddy turn the steering wheel lock to lock and start looking for slop from the wheels in and work your way up all the way to the steering column. There's also potential that it's just time to get a new steering box as well.

As for exhaust...you can make that whatever you want it to be. You can have a shop do it, or buy some pre-bent pipe and go at it yourself.

Leaks...hopefully you can get away with some new seals and gaskets.

Welcome to FTF!:wavey: Nice post you wrote. Well, now that you have an old Ford truck, welcome to the fun part of working on them. A big advantage is that since they're old, parts are cheap. You can go to your local wreckers, auto parts store, or online. I'm glad you want to take the time to make your truck safe and reliable, just because they're old, doesn't mean they're a hazard on the road. For my truck, I had to do almost all what you listed except for the steering. Don't forget to check the brakes. All the best and post pictures often.

Welcome to the site. I agree with everything Ben said above. Many times, there are things loose in the steering and has nothing to do with the steering box. It could be a loose tie rod or a bad rag joint on the steering shaft, just need to find out exactly what is loose. Leaks, ya I hate em. Valve covers and rear main seals are the most common on the engine. Valve cover gaskets are pretty easy to replace. The rear main seal is more complicated to replace. Fix one thing at a time and you'll get there.

If it is driveable I would take it to a specialty Frame and Alignment shop and let them do a free assessment before you tear anything apart.

Once you have their professional info you will know what to do next
