New Old Truck

I was trying not to be a PITA by asking alot of questions while not having a gen 6 yet. Now that I have one look out!

Its a 79 F150 Ranger 4X4 Auto
The auction stated that it was a 400, When I picked it up the PO said it was a 351? He also said it was a daily driver, BS!!! The brakes barely work, the heater hose is run from the pump back into itself, etc etc. On a good note the body is in pretty good condition just has a S@$t paint job on it.

Drove it from southern Ohio and made it one hundred miles north before she died, and only had hundred thirteen to go. Started missing real bad, backfired a few times and if you turned on the headlights it stalled out. Messed with it a few times just to get another 10-15 miles. Found a place to park it overnight till I could come back and get it the next day.

Got home around midnight and decided to have it towed the rest of the way. Woke up this morning and there it was sitting in the driveway. Jump started it and moved it out of the way till I can get to it, paid the tow bill($267) and now I just got called into work.

I'll get some pics and more info on the truck as I get it. really not in the mood right now, Our relationship is of to a rocky start to say the least.

Later, Kyle.

Man that sucks about the troubles you're having already. Seems to be 351M's turn into 400's prior to purchase...happens all the time. The brakes and heater should be an easy enough fix though. I always put aside $1000 to put into a used vehicle, seems to be what it takes to make them good drivers again. As for the miss and back fire...my guess would be time for a carb rebuild. The headlight thing has me stumped a little...bad ground somewhere??? Anyway, hope she starts treating you better.

sorry to hear about the early troubles. Should be able to stick a few bucks into it and get it back to where it should be. But, it sucks that when the PO stated it's a daily driver and you find out it hasn't been for awhile.

Heres a few pics, with the rain and snow on the way back its really dirty.
Feelin a little better about it after a couple days, with the condition of most of the trucks in the northeast the body is in really good shape. Just a matter of going over it and fixing all the little things that have been neglected over the years. Next day off i'm going to get the numbers off the motor, axles and see what I've got(not versed enough to be able to tell whats what by just looking) The speedo does not work and it seemed to be running a high RPM at what I'm guessing was 50-55mph.

Yeah man...that's a reeeeeeeal sharp looking truck. Does it have the VIN and warranty plate still on the door (that is if it's still the original door)? If it does, post up what it says and I or someone else will be able to decode it for you and tell you what it's supposed to have.

Nice truck

Good idea. A few years back AAA did a study that said that was what most people put into a used vehicle when they first purchase it :)

I have been using this site for vin numbers.

The door plate says its a 78 2WD. The other say Vehicle unknown?

If nobody gets back to you soon...I'll get it figured out for you later tonight. I shouldn't be on, gotta type a paper.

Thanks...I learned that one from my dad. He's lived by that rule for decades. He always expects something to go wrong, and he doesn't wanna be caught with his pants down. He's toyed with a few numbers through the years, and said the average it seems that needs to be put into a rig over the first 6 months is right around $1000.

Makes sense almost every car I check for people at work who are looking to buy need around $1000 give or take a few dollars.

Ok today spent a few minutes getting some numbers off the truck. The sticker on the cab below the door striker was painted over. So I wet sanded the paint off hoping the clear tape was still intact protecting the printed numbers. It was. So now I have two matching vin #'s F14HNDC1138. Found another plate attached to the front passenger side of the bed with F10BNBC6123. The axles are pretty dirty but so far I've found a large 072 on the bottom of the pumpkin on front axle and nothing on the rear. Will find more once it's been degreased and cleaned up. Transfer case C-11865
