Just joined, too...

I'm also a newcomer to this site. I joined to get real-world input from real-world guys who work on these F-250 bad boys. Might as well jump right in, then...

My problem is the one-barrel carb on my 300 F-250. I had it rebuilt, then prob'ly buggered it by running really old, really bad and really rusty gas through it. I had two filters upstream from the electric pump, one on the pump (didn't know it had one) and two downstream. The two above the pump were those see-through Fram ones, about two inches OD and two inches long. One of the filters below the pump was one of those see-through Fram ones that's kind of tapered. The last one was the small metal one that screws right into the carburetor itself. I think I might be OK, given all those filters. I ultimately replaced the tank and went to just one filter below the (new) pump, also electric. Problem is, the vehincle blows black smoke if I goose it while stationary and runs like it's missing on three cylinders goin' down the road at speeds above 60 or so all the way to 80. I have contacted the folks who rebuilt the carb. They say to send it back and get it sussed; they will fix it. I really can't do that because I have a custom-built camper top coming for it in just a week or two. I have to have the truck there to have it installed; they don't like to keep special-order stuff setting on their inventory racks for too long.

So I need some really smart info as to what may be the problem. I have turned the single air-fuel mixture screw at the base of the carb half a turn this way and half a turn that way. Never seems to get any better. The carb that is on the engine I am told is not the exact carb for the engine. But I have to ask: What difference does it make if the fuel goes in and gets burned in the right air-fuel ratio? I live where there is no emissions garbage required to be on the engine, so that junk is long gone-- like seven years ago. What about putting on a two-barrel with one of those neato adapters? Any hassles in getting the throttle linkage to hook up with a two-barrel?
