Yep, what the Canadian said. Cross the posts on the solenoid and see what happens...

Hello gentlemen, first off i wanted to say thanks for the advice. Ive been without a truck for a week and shit sucks. I replaced the solenoid, points, spark plugs, spark plug wires, starter and distributor cab about a month ago and the truck had been running great until that day. Do you think the solenoid could be bad already or they sold me one with a short or somethan? I don't think its the alternator b/c it wont start and the alternator is what keeps it running but it is a rather old looking alternator so idk, i just hate spending money on a part to find out that wasnt what it was. lol moneys tight.

take that back gentleman it was the coils that i replaced but the solenoid is on the starter and i replaced about 2 months ago so could that still be it? and how do you bypass the solenoid?

The stater relay\solenoid should be on the fender sidewall. If you jump the positive terminals it does the starter turn over or at least click?
Are your grounding straps to the engine making good contact a poor ground to the engine will cause this also.
You may have got a bad battery new doesn't mean good, try jump starting it.
