my green machine

Hello friends, I am new to this forum. A little over a week ago I bought a 1973 F-100. I can't tell you how happy I am to own this piece of history! Five years ago I owned a 1964 Ford Fairlane two door but had to sell it when my wife came down with cancer. I lost the car and my wife. But I had always wanted to have another collectible vehicle. I bought my favorite truck and it is also something I can use. I hope to make some friends here that share the love of preserving a piece of history as much as I do! Thank you, Donald

Hey Donald, looks like you found a great vehicle there and for sure you have found a great group of folks who share your love for these classic vehicles. Welcome to FTF!

Thank you Russell! Great to be part of a group of people who like this series of pickup. Not sure this is a car show worthy truck but I might drop into a local show just to see if it gets any attention. Looking forward to conversing here! Donald.:)

Thank you fatherdoug and you too smokie!! Here are some details about the truck. I looked on line for many months to find a classic pickup. Because my mother and brother live in Arizona I even looked out there and thought I would drive it back to Tennessee if I found one. But one day I saw this one in northern Tennessee and for some reason I just knew that was the truck. I drove it back the two hundred miles or so with my friend following me in my car. It has a 360 V8 with about a thousand miles on a rebuilt motor, auto trans and has been modified to MSD ignition. It even still has the AM/FM with a cassette player! A real time machine from the days of Tony Orlando and Dawn!
It has almost no rust which was a surprise because most trucks rust in some usual places. I want to get a clamp-on tonneau cover for the bed because I fly rc airplanes and don't want things to blow out. I love the two tone green because I am Irish and love green!:)

Hey Donald....I'm glad you're here and sorry for your loss.....I can't emphasize enough (as a not-so-mechanical guy who loves classic Ford trucks) the genuenity of the people in this group! You hit the jackpot if you ask me....fellas on here are honest and know their Fords...especially dents; there's a huge dentside following on here.

Congrats on the rig....looking forward to seeing progress and updates!

I've never been a fan of clamp on tonneaus (buttons?) Just cause all of the drilling into the bed you have to do, not to mention the pain of taking it off and on regularly. ....may I suggest an aluminium frame and a vinyl tonneau; one that is super light and can come off in seconds. ...I have one for my 77 :).....so I may be a tad biased. ....I also have a roll out tonneau on my KR and LOVE the convenience of that style also!!!

Hi Ken and thank you for the warm welcome! I hear ya about the dent following! I just got back from a 20 minute drive just because it is a beautiful evening! I can't help it though. The darn thing is so comfortable to drive even for an older truck. I agree about the cover. What you mentioned is just what I am looking for. No drilling. I know they have the kind that just clamp on (not the button kind...) and are easy to remove. BTW, do you have any suggestions about bed protection? Mine is in pretty good shape so I would like to get something but don't want water to collect underneath and cause rust issues. Anyway, looking forward to talking with everybody here.. Donald.

Hello and another warm welcome :)
I had to chuckle when I read your reference to Tony Orlando and Dawn. Haven't heard "Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree" in over 20 years, lol!
Can't wait to see more pictures of your great looking truck! You're already a FTF!
Cheers!

Personally, I'd stay away from the plastic liners....they'll just retain moisture between the liner and the bed.....I'd go with a spray on or roll on bed liner, which is what I have in both my rigs and before you ask, they were both done by the prior builders.

Mark and Roy, thank you sooooo much for the warm welcome! Must say I really have the FTF bug! I didn't know there was so much enthusiasm out there for these old dent sides until I bought one. I am VERY glad I did. My wife and I take care of my mother-in-law on weekends. We had a great visit this last Saturday when I got her a chair to sit in and we just talked about good things as I shined up the aluminum on my truck. She really loves that truck and I asked if I could take her photo with it. Here it is.

yours, Donald
