hi all thought i would start my introduction by asking a question.
my truck blew a plug.it has 244,000 miles on it so i guess i can't
really complain but what angers me is the cost of repairing it.
3000 for a head and 1500 for a heli coil with no warrenty.i love
my truck but can't afford to have it repaired.my question is,is there
any way to fix it cheaper?i'm retired and on limited income.any
help would be appreciated thank you.

Have you got any mechanically minded friends that can help you remove the head and you would then be able to buy a heli coil kit like this for $29.95 and be able to do it yourself.

You can do this ON the truck. There is no need to replace the head. Most shops won't warranty a helicoil install as they are not that great of a fix. I have done many heli installs and the only time you would need the head off is if you are working on the #4 cylinder as it is almost impossible to get to on the truck. If it was me I would fix it myself and save about $4500. Orielly's sells a whole kit for like $30 that comes with the tap, driver, and coils. All you would need is a 1/2" drill bit. Just remember to put some bearing grease on the bit as you drill to keep the metal flakes from getting into the cylinder, and don't press too hard on the drill so you don't poke a piston as you get it drilled.
