Motorcraft Gold Coolant

General discussion, as I believe it's been used in pretty much all new Fords for a number of years now, but I'm particularly interested in it for my '09 Ranger.

Owner's manual states that the factory fill of coolant should be changed after 6 years/105,000 miles, and then subsequent fills should be changed after 3 years/45,000 miles.

What's the deal here? Is the Motorcraft coolant I can buy at a Ford dealership not the same stuff they put in at the factory? Are they just fudging the numbers so they can talk about 100k service interval?

It's my understanding the difference is the use of distilled water. If you use it on the refill, go by the original numbers.

OK- thanks.

Guess I'll be alright for a while yet...though I can't imagine I'll actually run it for the recommended service interval.

Agreed. "Distilled" is the key word here. Demineralized or Deionized water has a lower pH, which makes the corrosion inhibitors work harder, and, therefore don't last as long.
