Heck I was told it was a 360.And I don't know how to tell the difference.

The only way to really tell is to measure the stroke - who knows what someone may have put in there over the years?

360 stroke is 3.5"

390 stroke is 3.78"

The vin says it's a 390

Steve you just lost me.

I'm talking about the stroke - the distance the pistons travel from the bottom to the top of the cylinder . The bore diameter of the 360 and the 390 is identical (4.052 standard). The stroke is longer on a 390.

Take a wooden dowel and stick it in the spark plug hole with the piston at the bottom of the stroke, then mark and remove the dowel. Bring the piston to the top of it's stroke, insert the dowel and mark it again. Measure the distance between the marks. That will be the stroke.
