Mercury Comet

I'm not really too much into fast cars, but I do want to build one really fast car sometime. Not for a while, but when I've got the money and space to really build it right. Somewhere between "stupid fast" and "scary fast" would be the goal, while still close enough to legal to take it out and wreak havoc on public roads.

I'm really digging the idea of a '64 or '65 Comet with an FE and a 4-speed. Strip the interior, build a cage, racing buckets, but still spend enough time and money on the body to be a "nice" driver.

Something sorta along these lines:

*I'm way too far away from this project to have any actual questions...I'm just thinking about it and figured I'd post up for fun. Anybody else think this is a cool idea? Or have a better one?

Nope...sounds cool. It would be fun to have a weekend hotrod if money allowed. That is what the 56 was going to be...didn't quite turn out that way. 'smiliedoh'

I have never owned a hotrod exactly. My first car was a 1970 Buick GS stage 1. 455 w/muncie 4 speed. I know...it was the other brand, but it was a lot of fun. You could be running 60 down the highway, drop it into 3rd and the car would almost stop while it lit up the tires. It had a 12 bolt posi as well. :p

I hate to say it.. But before I kick the bucket.. I plan to fully restore a 69 Camaro SS. My friends dad had one when I was in high school. That thing was DEADLY at the track. Ran an ol' school blower triple fin out of the hood. It was the hottest thing I ever saw!

A friend of mine has a 67 camaro. He had it on the dyno recently at 515 HP. His is a supercharged SBC.

He took first place at a pretty big show a couple of weeks ago.

Let me see if I took any pics of it.

I have a couple...not great pics:

NICE! I miss my friend.. I lost touch when I moved away. I'd love to know what happen to it. I can't remember the time slips but I know it OWNED the track back home. We had a 1/4 strip about 4 miles from my ranch. I could hear the cars at night running. His was so freaking mean, it had a lope that would make women DROOL.

He restored it from scratch. It was his fathers car, when he passed away it was given to him. He rebuilt it and turned it into the car his father always talked about but never did. It was black with white racing stripes.

The only sad part? It is way tooo nice.

He only drives it a couple of times a year (only to shows). He does drive it there though. It is not trailered.

The body is perfect. My lousy pics do not do the paint justice.

Sorry to hijack your thread Ian. That was not the intent. (embarrassed smilie).

A 289 comet would be stupid fast - not that the 289 is so fast - but the comet is so light! An FE would prolly cross the lin into scary fast. The comets were availible with a 390 a few years IIRC. I cant imagine what that would be like in such a light car.

The 390 in the Comet would be awesome insane fast...in the mid-70's a buddy had a 302 in a Maverick and that car was a mover. Someday I want a '55 Chev like in the movie American Graffiti.

Have you ever seen a Caliente? I believe it was made by Mercury, similar to a Comet but the headlights aren't stacked. I always wanted to build one with a 351 Cleveland 4V/C6/9" w/4.11's and a Detroit Locker. That would be stoopid fast! :)

I really like the stacked headlights...it's a big part of why I want to do a Comet.

Don't see too many Comets around, though...they're on eBay, and I can find forums, but I hardly ever see 'em at car shows, seems like.

The "grabber" was a factory 302 in the maverick. They did not get much (if any) recognition, but they were pretty quick. Rather surprising considering the reputation of the regular maverick.

The muscle car-themed Grabber trim package was introduced in mid-1970. The package included special graphics and trim, including a spoiler. It was offered from 1970-1975. In 1971 and 1972, the Grabber came with a special "Dual Dome" hood. A similar package for the Mercury Comet, the Comet GT, was also offered from 1971-1975 and had "muscle car" trim akin to the Maverick Grabber, plus its own distinctive hood scoop.

If you like stacked headlights, you don't want a '64, cuz the headlights are horizontal.

1965 (is what you pictured in post #1) was the first year for stacked headlights, but the 390 (and 427!) wasn't available till 1966.

1967 was the last year for the stacked headlamps.

Only one problem with Comets, there are very few parts available.

1972/77 Comets could be ordered with a 302 (as could Mavericks), but these cars are mundane plain jane every day nothings with no panache. Only a 2 door and a 4 door were available, no hardtops or ragtops.

Good to know...guess I need to do some more research.

Thanks!
