Looking for Taurus info

Does anybody know of a good source for Taurus info? maintenance, modifications, anything?

I just bought my grandparents 1996 Taurus, 90K miles, and in beautiful shape. Getting 9 mpg in town was annoying with the Mountaineer. This will be my DD and the Mounty is now moved to official toy status! :D

Plus, I don't need to be killing the KM2s going to get groceries. :D

30 mpg vs 13 makes a difference.

Not to mention the mounty is undrievable right now, as the front wheels want to fall off, the bearings are out, and I am not going to change them till I get my wheels.

Keep an eye on the transmission- they're about the only weak link in those things. Other than that, just normal wear stuff, at least in my experience with 'em.

"Transportation appliances" in my opinion- reliable from A-B for many years and miles, but not worth the effort of making into anything more than that (unless you're starting with an SHO).

The nice thing about this is that its been expertly maintained with regular driving, but few miles. the interior looks brand new. They had seat covers and a hand knitted blanket covering the back seat (still there) :)

I love my Grandpa and Grandma! My Grandpa gave me $40 for an oil change, along with the keys. :)

The taurus' have been for the most part, reliable vehicles. The early ones are the ones with the weak transmissions. Maintenance has been the key. A well maintained car will give you years of reliable service.

The one and only reason I don't like that body style up to the new ones (sans the SHOs) is because I had to work on them in class, and grew to loath them...

With that, my aunt has one and it hasn't had one problem since she bought it... Mine, other than the no start issue at the moment has been flawless...

Only thing that'd make yours better Josh is if it had the 3.4 DOHC V8... :D

Big "Amen" there. BUT- mod it, mash the throttle a few times... and watch it turn to dust. I won't let my son touch the Marquis. At 155,000 miles, I know good and well it could only take one hot start off a stoplight to grenade a tranny or something else. For me, it's been pretty bomb-proof- but I know the car, and it's limitations.

We have a 96 with the 3.0L and auto in the family. I think it's floating around 110,000 now. It's the original motor & transmission. Keep the fluid current in that transmission and it's going to shift a lot smoother.

parents have a '92 Taurus wagon - 3.0 v6 auto. Keep the trans fluid changed you should have no problems. 262,000 on it last I heard, still runs great...

Early ones as in the first generation? up till 95? Its a GL with the 3.0 OHV, not the 3.0 Duratec. Is there any way of strengthening the transaxle? a "shift kit" of sorts? I know they can lengthen the life of regular transmissions, but this is my first front wheel drive vehicle. I am a little lost.

The SHO had many problems of its own, mainly it would like to disintegrate its camshafts whenever it felt like. some went at 15K other 115K. Kinda random.

This thing is all about reliability and economy. I have had fast cars, I just want something that runs great and gets good mileage.

Didn't disintegrate cams, Ford/Yamaha did a friction fit on the cam gears so after a random amount of time they'd slip and bye bye engine...

After welding the cam gears they never had another issue...
