Let's Talk Pulleys...

The test subject would be the Bronco. I was looking at undrive systems for the Mustang, which naturally turned back to implementation on a 335series. Which then progressed into a serpentine system, which I've heard about but can't seem to get many details on what was used. So...

1) So starting with underdrive pulleys for for a 335 series. I'm probably over simplifying this...but wouldn't it just be a matter of finding a proportionate percentage of the diameter of the original pulley? If so, is there a magical ratio for the decrease? And I wouldn't think all the pulleys would have to be decreased the same amount would they (ie, I see the crankshaft pulley being the biggest issue to support the proper number of belts). My thought process is if you can find pulleys in the appropriate widths and the appropriate diameters, this could be accomplished. I'd also think bolt pattern would be an issue, but couldn't those be redrilled?

2) A serpentine system for the 335 series. Again, I'd imagine the tough part here is cross-referencing for the appropriate diameter pulleys. Does the appropriate diameter change due to a serp swap? And a tensioner pulley would have to be implemented as well, correct? I have the idler pulley/bracket for the A/C system still, could this be utilized?

On both of these systems, I figure spacers could be utilized very easily for the alt and P/S systems if need be. As for the waterpump...instead of spacing the pulley out...would it be possible/prudent to get a block of aluminum and machine the necessary passages? And that leaves the crank pulley being the only pulley that needs to be nailed to perfection in my mind.

3) If I were to go full serp, why not go an underdriven serp setup?

4) Which would be the better setup to go with and/or do both? Only flaw I can think of with a serp system is if the belt breaks you're dead in the water. The flaw with the underdrive is a potential drop in alt output (but I don't have many doodads drawing much power at all) and maybe low rpm water flow (so bump to a premium wp from FlowKooler).

Thoughts and opinions???????

In two words...March Performance. I was going to got that route until I saw that the alternator, AC were swapped sides...if I wasn't trying to keep the original look, I would have gone that route.

Alright...I'll give it a look when I have some time. Another thing that spawned this...was I noticed (for the Mustang anyway) that some of these systems and they weren't cheap. So I was kinda on a mission to see if this could be done via junkyard/oem parts. I just didn't know the science behind the proper amount of reduction and whatnot.

The Bronco is a dirty girl...and likes being treated as such. She's like the cheap skanky girl you have on the side...you don't wanna invest too much into her...and I think that's a little more than she deserves.

Why not worth it?.....if I wasn't trying to maintain a "stockish" look on my truck, I'd be all over that thing.

Underdrive kits usually spin the alt a tad faster, unless your just going with a smaller crank pulley.... but the kit i got for the truck had one for the alt too... The ratio was pretty close, but i was getting a tad more charge from it since the ratio wasn't exactly the same...

just go get a March serpentine kit for the mustang.. dont even touch the bronco with it.. not worth it.

but totally worth it on the Stang....

Probably not for the Bronco...as I sit here, typing this, I'm contemplating going efi 460 in it. Been toying with that idea for a while. I figure if it'll be an offroader, the ability to drive upside down would be nice, yet still retain good street manners. However, over the next couple years as Red gets reconditioned, it's something I'll definitely consider.

That's the issue though Don, I'm not looking to go kit form. I dunno what the ratio actually is, which then will tell me what list of pulley's to start looking for.
