Just finished my 130amp alt swap

So as the title says--- I just finished replacing my 95amp alternator with a 130amp alternator from a Taurus.

It's been kind of a long project because I had to gather parts from a few different places and then run back and forth between Davis and my mom's place to use the tools up here at her house (impact gun, bearing puller, etc).

I ended up getting the 130amp out of a Taurus. Andy and I went to the junkyard and I frankenstein'd about 3 alternators together to get 1 really new looking alternator (inside and out). I even found a Motorcraft voltage regular that was just about BRAND new!! ($95 part at the dealer). Walked out with the new-ish alternator and new-ish voltage regulator for $25 :rofl2:

Then I ordered a thicker charge cable and bearings from RJMInjectiontech.com, same guy that runs for fordfuelinjection.com. That was a life saver because NONE of the parts houses sell these danged bearings.

Replaced the bearings but the case was still wrong. My truck had a side mount alternator and the Taurus has a pivot mount alternator.

Turns out the PSD also has a side mount alternator so my brother gave me his old one (non-working unit) and I swapped the guts of the Taurus alternator into his PSD case :D

Just finished installing everything and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The reason I started this project was because the Taurus fan was pulling major power and my alternator couldn't keep up at an idle, even on the low speed! Now I can turn the fan on high speed, while idling, and the gauge dips a bit then pops right back up to normal :nana: Sooo worth it.

Cost of project:
$25 --> alternator + voltage regulator

$40 --> 2AWG charge cable + (2x) 175amp Mega Fuses + Fuse holder

$10 --> Front and rear bearings for 3G alternator

If anyone is considering this swap, I highly recommend RJM Injection for any parts that you may need, especially bearings. They're OEM bearings (best I can tell) and the service was fantastic. The quality of the charge cable is also very impressive, looks exactly like the picture.

Thats sweet skan.

Ive been wanting to do this as well, hate seeing the alt guage dip way down while my trucks at an idle with the off road lights are on.

What other vehicles have a side mount alt thats a 130 amp?

PSD, and I THINK the older explorers and vans have them too, but I've not confirmed. They're definitely side mount, but I'm not sure if they're 130amp. It can be confirmed by comparing case diameter. The 130amp is larger than the 95amp.

Just be careful because I think certain models had 95 amp alternators too, so you might want to bring something to measure and make sure its bigger.
