Is my 2002 7.3 broken

My f250 has 350,000 miles and has been a great truck but last week i was coming home and it sounded like a valve started tapping and then went away. i was only about a mile from home so i drove it home. After turning it off i checked oil and it was fine so i cranked it up and it was smoking a little.I let it set for a couple days and when i went to crank it again it wouldnt crank but will spin over But sounds bad. WHAT COULD IT BE

whats the oil quality like?
is the hpop res full?
does your tach move when cranking?
are your tanks more than 1/4 tank?
checked your fuel filter lately?
checked fuses, particularly fuse #22?
any smoke while cranking?
~if so, what color?
have you checked the VCH's for burnt pins?
how fast is your starter spinning the motor over?

when you crank on it, what is the sound? metal on metal?
