Gawd I hate cars sometimes.

Anyway...noticed a couple little drips of coolant underneath my Escort today; it appears the (very minor) leak is where the plastic tank meets the aluminum core.

Maybe re-bending the "tabs" would help, maybe stop-leak...but I think it's just time for a new radiator. Shouldn't be too bad a job, and while I'm decidedly less than thrilled about paying for one...they aren't too awful expensive.

But- here's where the question comes in: I don't have time to change a radiator for a couple of weeks. I'm figuring to drive quite a lot in that time, too, and I'd really, really like to use the Escort not the pickup if I can. (I'd rather drive the pickup than have the radiator blow on the Escort...but at the same time, there's no telling WHAT might blow up on the pickup :( )

Is a leak like this likely to lead to blowing the radiator completely? It's not cracked, just seeping a little at the seam.

EDIT: Not sure if it's relevant or not- I got this car from my grandmother. Back maybe...almost two years ago, she asked me to look at it because the "low coolant" light was on. I topped off the coolant, couldn't find any evidence of a leak, and have simply been keeping an eye on the level since then. None has had to be added since then (and it wasn't low enough to be a concern- the rad was full, and still a little in the overflow bottle). So it's entirely possible this thing has been leaking like this for a couple of years or more. It's never left drips I noticed on the ground- I was underneath it and saw the moisture on the splash shield.

Throw a jug of 50/50 in the trunk with you, and just drive the thing. I lose more coolant than that from... I don't even know where.

I'm not concerned about the coolant loss if it stays where it is. The Ranger's been sipping half a pint of coolant every month or two (sometimes more) as long as I've owned it.

I'm concerned about this being the precursor to the tank blowing off the core while I'm running down the highway.

OK, that's what I figured, too,

Thanks!

My escort did the same thing. It was a slooooow leak though. I would have to refil it 3-4 times a year tops. The engine was so small that it seemed like it would never over heat even if there was no coolant in it! (Did not want to chance that though!)

No way, no how.

I know where the heater core is in this car...and while I can change it if I have to, I'm sure as heck not going to dump anything in it that will clog it up.

[sigh]

So I put a new radiator in this car back in August, and replaced both radiator hoses while I was in there.

Now I'm losing more coolant than ever. Quart a month, maybe a little more. Pretty sure it's an external thing (oil and exhaust look good, smells of coolant under the hood), but I haven't found it yet. Guessing it's probably a water pump...which means a timing belt, also, on this car. (At least, given the age of my timing belt, it would be foolish not to replace it while I'm in there...)

I hate this car.

In fact, I hate it so much I went down to Ford today and spent a while talking with a salesman about a new Ranger...but I'm really not comfortable with where they payments would be, so I think I'm going to have to fix car up and run it another year. :(

Suggestion Ian? Forget the Ranger for now, look harder at a base Focus. I'm seeing them run around $12,000 up here. Trade in the Escort (and maybe even the Ranger), walk away with a car payment of around $200/mo or so. Factor in 35 mpg hwy and zero maintenance/upkeep expense for the next 2-3 years, and I think you'll find you're money ahead going that route.

It's definitely an option...I really need to find a new Ford dealership. It's too bad, as this one is moving to a new location just a couple miles from where I work, but the sales experience was awful. I told the guy all I wanted was numbers, but they weren't too easy to get.

Got fed up with the whole experience before we talked much about Focuses.

As I was leaving, I walked past a base-model Focus- crank windows and everything- sticker around $17...which sounded really high for that. $12 is a whole different ball-game, though, if they're really discounting them that much.

I really could use 4x4 (or AWD, I suppose, if it's a car) where I'm living, though. Not 100% necessary, but would be very, very nice to have.

Clown of Death!
Mine in my truck leaked for a good while before I got around to changing it, and you can't crimp it and have it work!!!
