this trans works well, but in 1st through 3rd gears it is extremely loud.

4th gear is quiet as a mouse. I am told that 1st - 3rd gears are on a side shaft that get more torque than 4th, since 4th is a "straight through" shaft, it is quiet.

what's a good price for a used unit?

I don't have a clue, it would be dependent on your area. I've seen them go (used) from $50 to $500+.
