When I bought my '09 Ranger, I decided it was a convenient excuse to sharpen up my Excel skills. With help from a wide variety of sources, not least my buddy Evan Williams
, I got a little carried away and wrote a pretty nice spreadsheet to track gas mileage, and a few other things.
Nice enough I've kept using it for 21 months and 33,000+ miles now.
Summary goes like this:
Best MPG: 22.7
Worst: 15.8
Overall: 19.9
It's better than I'd counted on when I bought the truck (4.0, 4x4, 3.73 gears with a 5-speed, on stock-size tires), but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's real impressive for a small truck that doesn't get worked hard or driven hard very often, either. (I have to say I'm a little disappointed I can't get my overall average quite to 20...probably if I didn't run snow tires in the winter, I could.)
Click the thumbnails to get 'em big enough to see.
Here's how my MPG's have varied on a per-tank basis:
Here's the lifetime average, updated at each fillup:
MPG by date (watching what snow tires and winter blend gas do):
And, just for fun, plotting the odometer readings against the date:
(I'm always surprised by how linear that one comes out- my daily commute is neither consistent, nor a significant fraction of the miles this thing sees.)
