how much fluid for complete power steering?

I just replaced the gearbox on mine. Flushed out all of the lines and pump. I bought a gallon of PS fluid and used less than half of it. It was the same price in the parts store to buy a gallon or 2 quarts.

Changing Power Steering Fluid

Hello and good evening.

I want to replace my PS Fluid as well but I do not know how to drain it all out.

When you say "flushed it all out" how did you accomplish this?

I would appreciate your help.

I replaced the steering gear with a rebuilt unit from RockAuto. With the original gearbox out of the truck, I removed the hi pressure rubber line and the steel cooling line, drained all of the oil from them, and flushed them with brake cleaner and compressed air. I then took the drive belt off and spun the pulley by hand and collecting the oil coming out while adding some fresh oil. When the oil coming out looked clean I stopped. I installed the rebuilt steering gear and reinstalled the lines. I refilled the pump and again spun the pulley by hand until all of the air was out and it was full of fluid. After replacing the drive belt I then proceeded to cycle the steering wheel full left and full right with the wheels off of the ground (engine running), checking the fluid level to make sure that I didn’t run it low and get the oil aerated. I shut the engine off and let it sit for 30 minutes or so to let any air escape and rechecked everything for leaks.

Replacing Power Steering Fluid

Hello and good morning.

Thank you for helping me out!

My Power Steering works fine and is quiet whereas I have seen several threads stating how Ford's Power Steering make a lot of noise.

However, my truck will be 27 years old in March so even though the Power Steering is fine there is some very old fluid.

My only problem is that even though I have a Air Compressor there is no outside power available as I live in a 47 unit apartment complex.

Do you think that I can disconnect the hoses and remove most of the fluid?

Moreover, is there a drain plug on the Steering Box?

Thank you again for your help and I bookmarked this page for reference.

Take care and Godspeed!

Hello and good morning.

How did you flush your Power Steering fluid? I have a compressor but no outside power as I live in a 47 unit apartment.

What did you use (chemical) to flush the system?

Thank you.

Yes just take the return line off somewhere and let most of it drain out. Then fill back up. Let run while keeping an eye on it. You can prob do a few times untill clean.
