Help with VIN Tag

Hello all, first time posting on this site. I'm in the process of purchasing a 77 F150 4x4 SWB. I have decoded the VIN tag but have been stumped on the axle section. The code is "H2J" can someone tell me what the front axle is? All I've been able to find is that J stands for power steering.

Front axle will most likely be a Dana 44 with the same axle ratio. If you're lucky, the axle tag will still be on the differential housing.

Ok, so I guess the front axle is not designated on the tag. I'll look at the axle.

Thanks

If I'm reading the vin decoder correctly, there were only two front axles available on the F150 - 350, which was a Dana 44 3550 lb and a Dana 60 3800 lb axle. The axle codes on the tag are usually just for the rear axle, other than the power steering/adjustable column designation.

How to I find out what the front axle is? Shouldn't it be listed on the VIN tag?

Axle code is on the data plate, along with paint colors, trim levels, etc. Then I revert to my Ford shop manuals that decode those codes.

only front ends that I've heard of in these truck for 1/2 tons were dana 44's...so it's got a limited slip dana 44 front differential(if its still original).

The front axle is ALWAYS the same or slightly different

ie: R = 3.54:1 & F= 3.54:1

or R = 4.11 :1 & F = 4.10:1

This of course is OEM configuration

after it leaves the factory anything can happen

Any axle code that starts with H is a Limited slip axle

But again, this is OEM and the after it leaves the factory anything can happen
