Help please 2000 Ranger

Hello everyone... I was on my way home from work a few days ago. My truck ( 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0 flex fuel 4x4) and it started to jerk really hard. I mean a violent chug!! then about 10 miles later it just stalled. I was able to get it started by pumping the gas about 20 to 30 times a second. Just to get home. My speed was only about 3mph but i made it. Now it wont start at all.. I have 160,000 miles and about 7,000 miles ago I put plugs, wires, air filter. I replaced the battery Early that day. I don't have a clue what to do I bought a new fuel filter but i have good fuel pressure. any suggestions would be great...smilieFordlogo

Welcome to FTF! I'm going to move this thread over to the Ranger forum where it might get seen by more of the right people.

TPS was my first thought, too...but the FlexFuel has me wondering if there are any sensors as part of that system that could fail? I'm not familiar with how that works.

I once tried driving my '97 Ranger down the road with the TPS disconnected (oops ). Never threw an engine light, and as long as I was accelerating it behaved normally (standard shift, so I'd imagine I'd have felt any hiccups) but once I tried to cruise at a steady speed it bucked so bad I couldn't drive it. Never died on me, though.

I did have a failing fuel pump do somewhat similar to me in a '00 Focus, too. When the tank got low, the pump would overheat and the car would buck, then it died. With over half a tank, or for the first 10-15 miles, it ran perfect. That was a known problem with that car, though- not aware of any common fuel pump issues on Rangers.

What is your fuel pressure?
Are you getting spark?
Sounds kinds like it jumped time, check your timing belt align the makes and see if it is on.

Thanks for your reply. No CEL on. Yes I get spark The fuel pressure is normal It wants to start but just wont fire.... I do get a flashing battery light when i am cranking it? This all started hours after putting a new battery . I installed a new battery because a few days before all this happened i would be driving at 60 MPH and it would just die... So i was thinking ignition switch?? Have not put that in yet. It is very cold here in Illinois..:headbang:

just because the CEL isnt on, does NOT mean it does not have codes in the computer. pull the codes.. it'll very likely lead you in the direction you need.

if no codes, then look into that battery, if it started doing this after the battery then they may have given you a bad battery..

What would cause it to just stall wile just driving at fill speed? Then I would cycle the key off then it would fire on the first crank. But ONLY if I cycled the key off. Other wise it would crank and crank. No fire.:suspicious:

sounds like wiring problem somewhere in the ignition system. but hard to say.

or it may be Throttle position sensor.

my 92 F150 had a bad throttle position sensor. had a code. but no CEL.. thats why im sayin pull the codes..

hard to say with no codes being pulled..

Some auto parts stores will scan codes for you for free.

Might try that rather than buy a scanner.

OK guys It is not a crank sensor and not a cam sensor and not a ignition switch Has fuel pressure, Spark, and Its not a fuel filter. Backfires out the throttle body. Also No CODES!!!! Will NOT start with carb clean Either?????
