I'm pretty sure the '01 Marquis needs a heater core. Just how much of a PITA is this to replace? TIA.

There not to bad to do, the dash does need to be pulled. It's a couple hours worth of work, I had a 98 Crown Vic went through 3 factory Ford cores, damn car had zippers on it lol. If you do not need the heat now and want to put it off, you can pull the hoses off the core and I used a plastic flush T and installed it between the hoses.

Thanks! It appears not to be cycling coolant with the temp turned down to 60 degrees (Auto Climate Control). I say "appears" because you can't see/feel/smell anything with it off, but it sure makes itself known the second you crack the heat.

Update: been almost two years, same heater core. Now starting to smell a little coolant again. Nothing leaking visibly, no noticeable loss of coolant. Just smell a little coolant when the heats full-on.

You might verify that the external a/c drain isn't plugged up. Any residual condensation buildup from the a/c being on during defrost operations might contribute to the smell.
