GM recalling Chevrolet Sonics to check brake pads

DETROIT -- General Motors Co. said on Friday that it is recalling more than 4,000 of its 2012 Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars to check for missing brake pads.

Less weight means better gas mileage. Gotta drop a few ounces where ever you can. Why not remove the brake pads?

That was the first thing I thought of too. But then, wouldn't you think someone at the dealership would realize something was off when they pull the car to it's resting spot on the lot...or what about pulling the car(s) off the truck...or putting the car(s) on the truck. It worries me that that many folks that handle that many cars on a daily basis didn't realize the brakes were janked up before they hit the lots, much less making it to the consumer.

The possibility that some Sonics could be missing an inner or outer brake pad was discovered during warranty service for a rental vehicle customer.

In other words, one of the rental companies had a customer out in one, customer complained about the brakes, and they sent it into a dealer for service, and that's what they discovered.

Several years ago, we had a tech that did a brake job, and didnt sufficiently seat the pads in. Customer brought it back in on a wrecker. The pads fell out! Gouged the wheels pretty good. He asked "Havent you guys had pads fall out? Happens to me all the time!". "NO! WE DO THEM RIGHT!". He was let go after that.

So I'm under the assumption that the pistons were riding on the rotors ? And didn't fall out of the caliper ?
Pictures of this would be great.

Maybe they had the pad on the inside of the caliper and the piston side was just rubbing the rotor.

He went to a local quickie mart, then from there, I dont know.

If I remember right, it was an Expedition. The outside pad came out after sticking out and gouging the wheel all the way around. It bent the pad enough for it to eventually fall free.
