got the chug chug chugs

had to use the 78 today to haul some stuff, and when first accelerating my truck chugs and once it shifts it stops and after running for a bit it stops chugging alltogether . I've changed the plugs about 150miles ago. My dads says its running rich. I don't know whats going on. I also changed the air filter plus an oil change around the same time as the plugs. I doesn't sound like a vacume is off. Any tips for what to look and try?

Sounds like the choke needs to be adjusted if it stops once it's warmed up.

There are certain things you trouble-shoot while the engine is cold

Just as there are certain things that you trouble-shoot ONLY when the engine is at normal operating temp

You have to know what those are because driving a vehicle from cold to normal can show several different things

The choke should be closed when the engine is cold and slowly starts to open as the engine warms up and all the way open when the desired temp is reached. If the choke opens up too so soon, the the cold engine won't get enough fuel and if the choke opens up too slow, it will run rich.

Do you have an electric or manual choke?

How long are you letting it warm up before you take off? What part of the country are you in and did it recently get cold there? It sounds like you may just need to let it warm up a little bit more before you take off.

I've taken off in my truck with morning temps in the 30's around here lately. If I don't give it a few minutes to warm up, it chugs and chokes. I would try that first--simplest thing.

The choke is automatic. The weather has dropped some, and I let her run a couple minutes before I go. Today while I had it in park running the engine wouldn't idle down even after a couple pumps on the gas. It idles down when I put it into drive, chugs until it shifts.

The fast idle usually is normal when first starting the truck until the choke gets all the way open. If you idle down to soon, the engine starts to run rich because the choke hasn't had a chance to open. How cold is it getting and how long does it take for the choke to fully open. Adjusting the choke can be a seasonal thing, during the warmer weather you want the choke to open up fairly fast because the engine won't take long to warm up and so it doesn't need that initial dump of fuel that cold weather needs. Like I said, start up the engine at cold temp and watch the choke flap open and see how long it takes. It may need adjusted.
