Mulally was hinting at this a couple months ago... The market niche for these is just flat-out gone. Sad to see it go but I can't say I've ever had the itch to buy one.
I have had Mercury's in the past nice cars.It surprised me they kept the name around as long as they have. Most are nothing more than re badged ford modes with a few more comfort features.
I was surprised they lasted this long as well, I have had 4 Mercuries. 1978 Cougar XR7, 1993 Cougar XR7, 1997 Cougar XR7, and my 2000 Mountaineer. All good vehicles, and I still have the 78. I like them because they are a little different. I mean, come on, Thunderbirds were/are a dime a dozen.
In today's world where you can check a box and fork over a few extra bones to have super duper extra deluxe comfort, I don't see the need to have the bottom rung 'luxury' lines like Mercury. Shoot the gap is getting even smaller between Fords and Lincolns. So yeah, no surprise here.
Very true...and the nice thing was if you bought something a few years old...you got those extra little luxuries, but it didn't seem like the Mercury name held resale values as well. So you got the 'upgraded Ford' for less money. At least that's what prices around here reflected.
same goes with any domestic "luxury" car. Lincolns and Cadillacs don't hold their value for anything. Some of the best "luxury for the money" car buys are a couple year old Lincoln or Caddy.
