F---ing Brakes!

TexasNomad

FTFS Designated DRINKER!
I just did a front and rear brake job on my truck, and then I took it and had the system flushed and the brakes have been great!
while I was driving around in the storm the other day I lost my brakes, but I pumped them a little and warmed them up and then they were fine..
Well while I was coming home from the car show I stepped on my breaks and heard this loud "CROP!" and then a bad metal grinding sound pedal went to the floor and had tons of bad feed back in the pedal.
I haven't had time to pull the drums off to look and see what the heck broke or happened..
Any one have any ideas what this might be before I start taking things apart?

One day i'll be able to go a week with out working on some thing....:guns:

Thats what it sounds like to me. Id just go get somne new keepers and the springs to go with em and that oughta fix it. The ones on those are easy compared to the ones on my jeep.

Sounds like the keepers came off allowing the shoes to drop.
Did you put a new maxipack on when you redid them?

What's a maxipack? That sounds like a first for me.

If I took a wild guess, he means a hardware kit.

yeah its a hardware problem it sounds like. i would get a new hardware kit which comes with all new springs for both sides and install that.

Ahh, ok. Yes, always replace all of the hardware when rebraking. Cheap insurance.

Sounds like some hardware broke to me as well. Same thing happened to me the day before I went to do the motor. So when motor is done I'm doing a complete rear brake job as well.

Thanks guys for the help.
I'm going to try and pull the drums off to day if the wind will stop blowing its guts out....

People need to realize that brake hardware. especially springs, suffer from heat
fatigue as well.

Well I knew better, but I didn't do it...
Popped open my drum and this is what I saw.

Well, That's not too bad Tex. Not gonna cost you much except time and a hardware kit, and adjuster. Coulda been worse.

from looking at that photo, there are 2 contact points for each shoe that need to be cleaned and some grease put on.
the star wheel assembly should just fit snug against the shoes on assembly
