EGR Question for Beachbumcook

I'm just curious Jeff, with you faithfully using DieselKleen and having 130,XXX plus miles, has your EGR valve ever given you any trouble?

Nope... no trouble.

Back in 2006 while driving to Florida for my daughters graduation from college (pulling a trailer to move her back), I had a lot of black smoke and sputtering for a few miles (stuck EGR I think), but it cleared up after 30 miles or so.

Over the years my local dealer has reflashed me and done various tests to see how my motor is working and even he mentioned that my EGR is working great!!! No sticking, it cycles properly when he manually controls it, and no error messages.

Currently I am at 131,000 miles and still running the EGR valve my truck was born with!!! I have to think that using a Dieselsite coolant filter helps in keeping the EGR cooler clean and prevents it from getting clogged as well as allowing the EGR valve to remain at peak performance.

I do believe that using PowerService additives year-round is key to providing the lubrication and "clean burn" that our motors need to stay clean, or as clean as a diesel can stay.

I use double dosage in every fill-up. I use 32oz per 44 gallon fill-up (or 1/2 that when I fill up at 1/2 empty on the fuel gauge. Maybe double-dosing is the key to a more efficient burn????

Thanks,

Thanks Jeff. I too am running Dieselkleen in my truck and with almost 47,000 miles have not seen a problem with my EGR valve. I didn't think you had any issues with your EGR valve but thought I'd check anyway. Like I've said before, you've set the benchmark for me to try to meet.....

Beach, remember, there is a new test that can be performed by the diesel tech to check egr performance. Ford provided us with one in new updates to the IDS

What is this new test and what does it do differently?

My dealer tech first plugs in and tests for any error's (none found).

He then manually "commands" the EGR to open and close and this too works well.

Curious what the new "test" is and what it assists the tech in figuring out?

Thanks,

It tests electronic response and physical response. It tests several other related sensor pids as well, that can affect egr performance.

OK... but didn't the "old way" test for this stuff too?

Didn't the old way test for electrical performance and manually commanding the EGR to open and close test for "sticking"?

Just curious what Ford or Int'l did to change the testing procedure... or is it more Ford marketing for the diesel techs to be baffeled by? I am sort of an old-school guy and figured that my diesel tech was very satisfied with what he was seeing and how my truck was working?

Just curious what additonal info this new "test" gives you that the old one didn't? Do you mean the old way did not test for these same parameters that are now tested?

Wow... Ford figures out a better way to test and after how many years, law suits and people running out of warrenty...now they have new mouse trap!!!

Beach, have your guy select on the IDS......toolbox, powertrain, air management, egr system test. The IDS will give him prompts on what to do. It needs to be at operating temp for it to work (eot over 185 degrees)

The next time I need to take in I will.

Everything is smooth sailing and I would need a reason to go there and have him hook up the IDS machine (or hook it up for some other reason) and just check everything while he is at it.

Thanks for the info.
