EGR Problems?

Hi
I have a 93 f150 4x4 Flareside, short box with a 351. About March-April of this year it started problems.
Sometimes it would idle around 2500 rpm’s and I could do nothing to make the idle drop to normal. It would do this with the engine hot, engine cold, it might run right for 2 or 3 days or it might idle high for a week. It was totally random weather or not it was going to run right. Sometimes it would do just the opposite, it would idle so low it would barely run. It did not seem to be missing but at times would feel like it lost power.

I’ll give you a run down of what I did:

1. Replaced the Idle air control – No change
2. Replaced the plugs, cap rotor and wires, pcv valve, air filter and breather filter – No change (doubted this was the problem but that stuff need done anyhow).
3. Checked around the engine compartment for vacuum leaks – couldn’t find any
4. Replaced the EGR valve and Air injection pipe (runs from egr to manifold) – Problem solved the truck has ran great all summer until now, it is doing the exact same thing again.

Today I went out and took the EGR valve off to inspect it, it is moving freely and looks clean. But I noticed the Air injection pipe, when it is disconnected from the egr valve moves quite freely where it connects to the manifold.
Should this not do that? I would think that should be an air tight connection.

When I was changing the EGR valve in the spring, I broke the old Air injection pipe. When I took a look at it I could see the shiny metal where I broke it, but I could also see some dirty corroded metal on the break as well, like it had already been cracked before I got to it. I was convinced that was my problem and not the egr valve its self.

Do you think I’m right, should I take off/replace the Air injection pipe again?

You might get some carb cleaner on a rag, and clean around the butterfly and the body of the throttlebody. Gum and varnish buildup there has been known to cause idling issues.

Thanks for the reply.
I will certainly take a look and give that a try, I did clean it out like that earlier in the year when I was trying to sort out the problem (forgot to mention that). Ideas are why I’m here though and for the next few days I will have just enough time to try small things like that.

Sure hope I can get it sorted out before the snow gets here, you can imagine how much fun it is trying to stop in the snow with 2500 rpm’s pushing you lol

id just plug ur egr line and spot on the intake and see if ur prob goes away. I remove all my emission stuff, just caus I dont like it.

I bad TPS can also made wierd idle probs, it could be failing sometimes and not. My bronco had that.

I dont think the EGR will give any kind of idle issue, i forgot to put my egr vac line back on when i did my valve covers, still idled fine.. IAC would be my first guess, but thats been replaced you said... so TPS is really all thats left.. unless theres an issue with your throttle cables or throttle body..

All the EGR does is just is put hot air/unburned fuel back into the engine (Exhaust Gas Reciculation), makes it run cooler, which is why you will get pinging if the valve is inoperative.

also try cleaning the throttle body, they tend to get massive amounts of carbon in them..

AND on a side note Welcome to FTF! And HELLOOO FLARESIDE!!.. pretty rare to see a regular cab flareside with the 351

I took a look at the throttle body, still looked pretty clean but I wiped it out since I was there. Everything seems to be moving freely too.
I’m thinking about having a friend hack me up a temporary blocking plate for the egr valve just to see if it makes any difference.
I think I read somewhere that you can test the TPS with an ohm/volt meter so I’ll look for the specs on that too.

Thanks, Do all flaresides come with the quad shock setup on the front? I have been thinking this truck may have been a special order.

Nope, not all of em.. mine has the quadshock setup as well. Its all part of a package, im willing to bet you have a step-n-tow bumper in the rear as well?

The only thing that leads me to believe its special ordered is the 351 in it.. i have yet to see a regular cab flareside with a 351 until now.. pics of engine???? please??? lol

Ahhh another Flare is around...I am lovin this and am very jealous of the Windsor...great looking truck you've got there..How did you test for vacuum leaks? Spraying starting fluid or carb/choke cleaner around the engine bay a little at a time around the lines will help you diagnose where the issues may be. After that then yes the EGR may be the issues.....I actually blocked my EGR by flattening a Mountain dew can drilling two holes in it for the bolts then sandwiching it between the intake and the EGR....some silicone will probably be needed. Welcome to the site man and don't hesitate to ask more questions.

@ NeXtras - No comments about the dirty engine compartment either lol

@ flareside_thunder - Funny you should mention that, I just tried this

But I only had the one gasket on the intake side, do you think it would still be sucking air in like that? it didn't seem to make a bit of difference, didn't run any better or worse.
And yes, I used carb cleaner to check for the vacuum leaks.

Dirty? you call THAT dirty?.. lol thats CLEAN my friend, u havent seen a dirty engine yet lol

I have seen the underside of many dirty engines,
I worked in the pit at a fast oil change for 2 years lol. Mine is just dust and dirt though, if i wasn't so lazy it could look nice.

Does anyone know if my computer gives 2 digit or 3 digit codes?

And what is the easiest/best way to clear the continuous memory codes?
