Spent the weekend at a buddies, and I wound up driving his car a few miles.

It's an '05 Corolla. Driving along at a pretty good clip on a crappy road I sorta got to noticing the thing drove kinda decent. Looked down at the odometer and see 171,xxx.

He treats it better than he'll admit to, but the only real repair he's done since he bought it with 100k is a wheel bearing. Who knows what was done before that, but everything about the vehicle makes me think "not much." At a minimum, all the suspension stuff has 70k on it- mostly commuting on pavement, but rural Maine pavement. Not the smoothest roads in the country.

So where does the crisis come in? Dad's got an '07 Focus- some of you have seen it. Nice car- I always liked little cars, for what they are. Last time I drove it I think it had around 50k- and it wasn't near as tight as this stupid little Toyota. Hell- I'm not sure it was any tighter than the Toyota when I drove it cross-country a few years back, and it only had 12k when I started that trip.

Our primary vehicle is an 06 4Runner that we bought new. It now has a 130,000 miles on it. I'm impressed with that vehicle. No recalls, no maintenance other than usual, and the vehicle is switchable from AWD to 4WD with a low range 4WD. I know the toyotas have been bashed pretty bad, but I would buy another one of these. Dooon't be that guy. They're not miracle cars.

Sounds like you need to go to time-out for a while in a 2012 Mustang.

Keep in mind, perception has alot to do with it as well. If you hopped in that car expecting the worse, and it did anything good, psychologically, you'll be more impressed with it and take more away from it than if you had high hopes for it...and vice versa. If you had good hopes for the focus and it fell short of those hopes, your reaction will be underwhelming. It's perfectly natural to be impressed by a car for what it is, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily as good as you perceive it to be.
