conversion of a 4wd auto transmission to 2wd

My son has a 1991 F150 5.0L auto 2wd that he loves. It has a bad E4OD (4 spd OD)transmission that is really expensive to replace. I have a friend that has a wrecked 1993 F150 5.0L 4wd that he would sell the (good 4spd OD) transmission from for cheap. Can I take off the transfer case and rear cone of the 4wd transmission and replace it with the shaft and rear cone of the bad 2wd to make a good transmission for the 2wd F150? Thanks for anybody's input on this!

No you can not do that, the output shaft is different, one is shorter than the other and you can not change the output shaft without taring the transmission all the way down.

The output shaft for a 4X4 are 14 3/8", 15 3/4 & 18 1/2 inches long.
The output shaft for a 2 wheel drive are 20 and 23 inches long.

so based on what you said, he can do it, but it's a lot of work?

Yes anything is doable-- but the transmission must be MOSTLY dissembled to get to the point where output shaft can be swapped. This is beyond the scope of most casual backyard mechanics.

anyone have one of those exploded diagrams of the E4OD to show this guy what's involved?

by the way, welcome to the site crosscut!

That's just what was in my photobucket... I think I have a fullsize one at home somewhere (not scaled down).

I guess this thread is kind of old but...
What about the drive shaft being modified instead of modifying the E4OD?
What obstacles would there be then? :)

There would be no support for the drive shaft on the 4X4 transmission. If you put the 4X2 tail housing on it the drive shaft would not reach inside the transmission to the output shaft.

That breakdown makes it look scarryer than it really is. Depending on how well you do with mechanical work it would be cost effective to do it yourself. You would be mainly pulling the guts out and swaping output shafts, you would need a gasket set. Since your not changing any "hard" parts there wouldn't be any measurments required unless you wanted to go that far to check it while you have it open. I could email the dis/assembly from the Ford Manual.
