Confirmed my fear....

I pulled most of the bolts off of the diff cover on the Marquis tonight and confirmed my fear; it's dry. Dry enough to not even need a catch pan!

I have yet to pull the cover off entirely simply because it's no easy task with the car on the ground. Is there anything I should look for when I get the cover removed? Should I go ahead and anticipate an entire rebuild?

I will say I'm definitely going to change the gears... 2.73!

Depends on how bad the gears are and if there's excessive slop in the bearings. I'd at least pull it completely apart, check all the bearings and the r&p for too much wear, replace what's needed including all the seals.

I'm betting the pinion race/gear is history.

I did that to my old s10 blazer. Leaked a lot worse than I realized, and it ended up running all but dry. Filled it up with oil and that was that. Never did have any trouble out of it. I'd try that first before you go sinking all kinds of money into it...

And there's nothing wrong with 2.73 gears. Better fuel mileage.
