Clearing DIC Alerts

I was just curious as to whether there was the ability to clear Driver Information Center alerts...ie oil change alerts, low fuel alerts, etc? I know that with the mid to late-90's caddies I've been around, a certain sequence of strokes on the DIC buttons cleared the alerts and then another sequence would turn them back on when you were ready. Not a big deal, just wondering so every time factory suggested oil change times come around the message doesn't display...or every time I get low on fuel the message pops up every few minutes. I know where I'm at, and I know what intervals I plan on going with, no need to flash across my gauge panel.

They have this unique and innovative tool for that. Its been out for quite some time. Oddly enough, it works on all manufacturers. Its.......................................................................................................................................THE OWNERS MANUAL!

Hmmm...must have overlooked that. I saw about resetting it, but it returns after it's been shut down. I'll give it another look tonight.

Sean...you oughta get a shot to the nards. I saw parts in the owner's manual that showed me how to temporarily clear the center, but not something that would allow me to clear it for the next 2000-5000miles and then reactivate it. For the record, the owner's manuals for caddy's didn't have the sequence in them, it was one of my dad's buddies who was a tech at a caddy dealership that passed alon that little nugget. Outside of that, I would have never known it was an option.

Alright Vince...I'm apparently alot dumber than you thought. I looked through all 346 pages of my owners manual yesterday and the quick guide and any other relevant piece of literature I got with that car...and I'm still coming up with the same replies.

I certainly found directions on reset buttons, manual manipulation of some settings...but that just lets you change remaining life percentages/expectancies. Nowhere, did I find the anything stating what needed to be done to disable the warning/alert displays and certainly not the ability to pick and choose which of those alerts/warnings I wanted to handle.

The manual also stated there were three forms of alerts:

-Constant alerts that would remain until the issue was resolved
-Alerts that would continue to go off regardless 10 minutes after every reset
-Declining life alerts that will go off at predetermined intervals

I expected to see all of that in an owner's manual, the same stuff was stated in the other vehicles I manipulated. Perhaps, that level of customizing the DIC has either been eradicated or not intergrated.

In the end, it's really no big issue, every time I get an alert, I'll just move my hand the 4" and reset it...I just didn't know if someone here may know how to customize the DIC.

Edit...something odd I did learn that I hadn't known before, and thought was odd...was the manual said if you're coming up on an interval where you know some sort of maintenance is necessary, but the alert doesn't flash...the manual said this is telling you, your air filter needs replacement.

Hardy Har Har...yes Cliff I did. I usually read all my literature one time through, then reference it as need be.

Thanks Randy...unless Vince comes up with something for me, that's probably the route I'll go...but even then that just resets it to 100% life.

Well, since Ben mentioned Caddies, I guess I can mention *oyota. On the 4Runner(06), there is no way to customize the DIC. You can only clear the message after it comes up. This is not mentioned in the owner's manual, because the dealer wants to service the car for you. Pushing and holding the tripmeter button while turning the ignition to the on position and holding for six seconds, will clear the 5000 mile oil change reminder.

I like to decide my own oil change interval. Lots of less than one-mile trips, and lots of dirt roads.

Well...the owner's manual had a section discussing how to change the % on the declining life of the oil...so I bumped it. Just rolled 12k yesterday, so I'll do an oil change this weekend or next.
