Bronco/351W info...

Trying to get my ducks in a row to put together an ECORS rig. I've already decided I want to go against the grain and not run a yota truck or XJ...and run an FSB. Since it's offroad racing, efi will just make things so much more consistent. I've decided the extra cubes are must, so 351 is the only option. For my particular class, the TTB will be advantageous, so that means anything from 80-96 (excluding non-efi platforms). I plan on ripping all unnecessary weight out from the firewall back (think nothing but DOM tubing and a gas tank)...so a pretty body isn't necessary, but a good solid drive train is.

-So what was the first year for the 351W to go efi??? I wanna say it was 87, right?

-I also know C6's came behind the 351 for a short time, and considering it's about as bomb proof as you can get...I'd like the two to be mated. What years was the efi/c6 cross over?

-Is there any significant power differences between 351's from the late 80's to 96??? If so, would the E4OD be that bad in a race application???

-Ryan hinted on some goodies to go faster in another thread, sounded like a typical top end rebuild can yield some pretty good results. Any specifics parts???

-What year did the 9" get ditched for the 8.8???

-Transfer cases...what were available??? Points of concern???

-Hubs, every gen 8 Bronco I ever had, had the push button 4wd...manual hubs available??? Or a conversion???

-TTB 44...I seem to remember somewhere that you could stuff TTB 50 internals in them to yield a little more strength.

The 351w went to EFI into different times depending on where you were, but if you get an 87+, it will be a speed density EFI.

If you get an 87+ bronco, it will have an 8.8" rear end, period.

The E4OD is just a C6 with overdrive, and electronically controlled. The integrity of this transmission is good throughout, but they got REALLY good in 1995.

I know the engines made minor improvements throughout their life in Gen 8 and Gen 9. If you're going to cam it and maybe do some different heads, I wouldn't let that be a determining buying factor.

I can't help you with 4wd specifics, I've never owned one.

From the performance perspective, you can go any number of ways. The reason GT40 heads are popular is because with only slight modification, they are bolt-on ready and genuine Ford parts. There are much higher performing heads on the market and they may suit your needs, but I don't know what the requirements are for that racing class. I bought & rebuilt my GT40 heads for about $650 (all said & done). They're not super high performance, but they are much better than stock E7 heads.

Alright...good to know about the EFI, so 87+ is my starting point. Just found in the rule book that axles swaps are acceptable...so a 9" would be swapped in short order. E4OD, I seem to remember that 94 was the last of the electrical gremlins...and Thunder has one that was problem free for for 200+k, just wasn't sure if an electronic or OD tranny would be suitable for a race application.

As for GT40's...I happen to have a set sitting in the driveway.

Thanks for the info...clarified a lot.

It's actually 88+ when then they went EFI. And you may get a c6 or e4od behind it... 351's never had an AOD behind them...

Yeah 9" rears stopped in like 84...

You'll have issues 92+ if you swap to a 9"... You won't have a input for a vss.. Which you need for your speedometer and for you e4od to shift correctly..

If I think of more ill post..

^^^Wouldn't be street driven at all...probably be illegal to drive anywhere, so I'm not really worried about the speedo working.

^^^Missed that part. Any clue when the C6 stopped being thrown in??? Or was one the standard auto and the other was optional??? Really, I'd just prefer not to have the E4OD.

C6s were around here and there till '96 though, so there's no telling what you might find if you look.

Also, the appropriate C6 will fit in where an E4OD was pretty easily IIRC.

E4OD is as good or better than a C6 in 1-2-3 and in OD it's just as stout as any OD Automatic of that era. Which isn't much, but it's nothing to sneeze at.

Don't get me wrong guys...I've had and beat on E4OD's, so I'm not dogging on them...it's just I'm not looking for the extra little somethings that can go wrong.

^^^Exactly. IMO, if I can minimize things that can go wrong with an offroader...especially a race rig, the better. That's why I was hesitant about efi at first...but it really is the smarter choice, don't want to hit an off camber bank and die in the middle of the track.
