97 expidition awd problems

Hello to you ford fanatics, I have a 97 expedition that has the dash mounted switch to select 2H,4AWD,4H,4L..My problem is that system is not working properly. I have positive activation of the front vacuum operated front diff actuator, engages and disengages front axle, lamp on dash responds when it does go in.. Most of the time I will get the 4x4 light but not get 4wd operation. After checking today if the front diff was actuating and cleaning wires and things,I tapped the transfer case motor a bit ,but dont hear anything? Some how now,it will go into AWD and I have 4wd,put it in 2wd and the light goes off and I'm in 2wd,back and forth it works today. I'm looking for information on how to diag what is my problem. It could be the transfercase actuator motor assbly, some kind of module or even the switch?Any help in this would be greatly appreciated . Thanks .Anyone know where I can get a wiring and theory of operation for this system . Thanks .Tbovard

The diagnostic procedure is quite extensive. There is a tsb on water in the transfer case (you might verify lubricant contamination). There could be codes stored in the gem module, but you need a high end scanner to access those codes. Trip to your dealer might be necessary.

Thanks

Thank you Blacksnapon ,I will look into scanning and if I can't I'll have Ford look at it . I'll get back to you and let you know what I find T Bovard
