96 460 rebuild...

I've decided to go ahead and rebuild the bottom end of Thunder's 460 myself. However, I assume disassembly of a rotating assembly is all pretty similar, my issue is not knowing how to handle the efi top side stuff and electronic connections...and basically the stuff that is there that isn't on a carb'd rig.

I'm also getting confused when looking at parts for compatibility, some things say they're a carb only application and others don't say anything at all. I assumed compatibility would only be in regards to the top end. Any pointers here?

And finally...Tom Monroe put a good book together for carbed 335's and 385's, but here again...I'm looking for something more applicable to the efi side of things. I've got Haynes and Chilton's but they're about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop. Anyone have any suggestions. And for a bonus, I know Tim from TMI has been a great asset anytime I've had a question on my 335's...anyone out there that would be as easy to talk and as helpful?

Basically, what it comes down to is, I'm uncomfortable with handling the electronics.

And I'm pretty much aiming for a stock rebuild at this time. Anyone have any suggestions on a kit?

So far this is what I know, a bad bearing and scored the crank. I figured that would need to be ground and polished. Beyond that, I'm not sure where to go with it. Suggestions? Advice? At this point, I'm not really sure of myself.

Edit...I'm just in the research stages right now, but plan on doing getting it done this summer.

Ben for all of the wiring just mark all of the connectors if you feel uncomfortable about disconnecting them and not remembering where they go. Take some pictures. It does look a bit overwhelming the first time you see a ton of wires, but it isn't really that bad.

So once I get all the wires disconnected, it'll basically be same ol' same ol'?

Yup pretty much.Only difference would be that you have to remove the fuel injectors and replace the o-rings. There are also a few more sensors, etc because of the efi but nothing too crazy. It's not as complicated as it might seem. Just keep track of where everything goes. There are more components involved, but if you keep it organized you will see that it isn't too bad.

Yeah...I'm usually the picture taking king and from 12 different angles. I'm just not real inclined when it comes to electronics and was a tad intimidated. That said, even if I do screw it up...it's sitting now...and it'll just keep sitting if I screw up...haha.

Be careful with some of the plastic vacuum lines. I broke one of mine.

Be carefull with the plastic connectors the get brittle. The only connectors the same are the injectors, all the rest are all different no way of getting it wrong. Take pics, notes, and label and you will be fine. Once you do it you will be suprised at how easy it is. It looks daunting but it really isn't. As said some sensors to be careful of other than that its basically the same.

Surprisingly enough, besides the 400, TMI is very knowlegable with the 429-460...and can get you good prices and one on one consultation.

yeah, aint bad to pull the electronics off..

honestly when you undo everything, and flip the wiring harness off and then put it back together and lay the harness back on, itll go back into place almost instantly... funny how it happens..

That's good to know. I knew he dabbled, I just didn't know to what extent.
