Does anybody know what size socket I need for the rear pinion nut on a 9.75 rearend. I'm putting in a new seal this weekend and I don't want to get it tore down only to find I don't have a big enough socket to take the nut off?
I don't know the answer, but I picked up a cheapo set of calipers from the local hardware store for a few dollars. It eliminates all the guesswork and I have used it more than a few times to measure a bolt or nut to make sure I had the right wrench or socket before I started.
I looked it up in my repair manual and it didn't tell what the size of the nut was, but it DID sound like the nut is disposable... The procedure said to "remove the pinion nut and dispose of it" the it said to put on a "new" pinion nut when you were done...
I did make the assumption that the OP knew how to replace one of these. I think you have to get a new crush sleeve and go through the whole process, including removing the carrier and axles and measuring the pinion bearing drag with an in-lb torque wrench.
