88's cold starts

ok this is on the 88 F150. on cold mornings like this morning if me or ann go out to start it up the first time it will start up barely and if we dont rev it slightly consistantly it'll die. then afterwords its like 1% chance itll start up. Now the truck has always had a starting problem but it has a brand new starter on it, me and my dad think the timing is so far ahead its causing a problem. only issue is i dont have a timing gun and dont know anyone who has one that will help me out. i mean i could go buy one but i dont know how to check the timing. so any ideas other than the timing?

chek timing.. and clean the IAC

i cleaned the IAC a while back. didnt change it any. its probably the timing. like i said i dont have a timing gun but can buy one but dont know how to check timing.
