I just bought a 1987 f150 I/l 6 cylinder, I have been driving it on weekends I went out today to take a ride to the parts yard and the serpentine belt started squealing. I removed the belt and found the only pulley that will not spin freely is the air pump pulley. should it spin freely?what does the air pump do? can I by pass it?

The airpump can be bypassed but you really should also remove all the plumbing attached to it and plug the holes where it meets the exhaust and motor. A seized air pump is pretty common but the upside is they're pretty easy to disassmble and free up and this will save you the trouble of finding a shorter belt and messing with all the plumbing.

The man is right . If u remove it take all other stuff off its hooked to . I just free em up myself .

But check local emissions laws . My area is just a visual but things change every day . Legally u cant but if state does not care its up to u.

Thats good, my F350 belt system has the belt tensioner on the side, and with the pump bypassed the tensioner doesnt do anything. I had to get such a short belt, that I had to slide the belt under the idler pulley and the tensioner just sits all the way down, belt is tight but would like to do something better in the future. I couldnt get the pump out of the bracket, and didnt want to pull the whole side bracket off to get the air pump out, so I could heat the bolts on the bench and then remove it all.
