Sounds like one of the cables might be grounding itself. Did this just start or did you replace the steering column?
 
Trace that single wire from the solenoid, and make sure it isn't shorting out on something or burned thru on something...

Had this same problem. The truck would run even without the key in the switch! Found out after a couple of solenoids that it was where the two (three) wires are coupled together before the attach to the solenoid had shorted themselves. The outside of the wires looked good but internally they were corroded. Cut them back and re-joined; problem solved. My mechanic and an auto electrician said it was the solenoid. Had it replaced 4 times (three under warranty). Parts guy at a wrecking yard clued me in. Some of those old buggers know a lot!

Clown of Death!
The terminal on the battery cable that goes to the starter has a flange on one side. I changed the starter once and didn't position it correctly and when I put the battery cable on the battery the engine started cranking. It was so bad, but I had to yank the cable off before I got run over by my own truck.
