79 compilation of questions

Hey fellas, these particular questions pertain to my 79 Bronco, but they're questions that will help across the board. Here are the questions:

1) Radio antenna no longer stays tight or remains in the proper location (and it's gold...so it needs to go). I believe my stereo reception problem is due to the antenna movement. So my question is, I can not for the life of me remember if I can just replace the antenna, or should/does everything from the HU to the antenna need to be replaced as well? Also...should I spring for the JBG OEM antenna, or should I go with the $19 aftermarket replacement from JBG?

2) Dumb Newbie question alert: The tailgate on the Bronco doesn't hold a good firm latch, so to firm it up when it's closed, do I want to move the striker and the latch further apart from eachother, or move them closer together...or just get a bigger diameter striker? I know it's an easy one to figure out on my own...just feeling lazy right now.

3) An emergency flasher problem...turn the flashers on and they work fine, after about 5 minutes they stay solid. Did the same thing with a new spare flasher I have, and a flasher I know that works. Only thing I can think of is...the brake pedal depresses enough to affect the flasher, but not enough to activate the brake lights when the flashers are off. You guys think I need to readjust the brake pedal too?

D8TZ18813C .. Antenna, includes Cable / Obsolete.

Fits: 1978/79 Bronco & 1978/79 F100/350.

KANKAKEE VALLEY FORD in Knox IN has one.

ED BENNETT FORD PARTS in Lebanon PA has one: 717-272-8762.

No other Ford Dealer, or other obsolete parts vendor has any.

Is the entire antenna gold, or just the antenna mast?

When the antenna snaps off, a stub shaft remains. Ford and autoparts stores sold antenna masts. You slip the end of that puppy over the stub shaft, a set screw tightens it up.

Antenna removal: Pull the cable from the radio, tie a long piece of string to it.

Pop the stainless steel cover off the antenna base, you'll find four screws attach it to the fender.

Pull the antenna off, then tie the string to the new cable, pull it from inside the cab to get that cable to feed through the hole in the cowl.

No string? Have fun feedin' that new antenna's cable through the hole in the cowl...it's a SOB!

Thanks for the info Bill. The entire antenna and base plate is gold. Thanks for the removal process too. As for the greenies...folks here a lot more gracious with their reps...I'd say about half are from tech info and half are from something funny or stupid. On the other site, I had roughly the same number of posts I do here and had right around 300 reps. Anyway, thanks for info, and good to see you.

If the Bronco is your trail rig, go with the cheap antenna. Then you're not out too much if you snap it off. I've done this. Took the antenna right off of my Bronco once--sliding down a hill backwards (long story) and side swiping a tree. It was even one of those fancy ones with the little spring at the base to keep it from breaking!!

Some body thought that it would be a riot if they ripped my antenna off, and I still get a good radio signal..

Fancy? Autoparts store "gypo" replacement.

There are ONLY TWO GENUINE FORD ANTENNA's available. One at a dealer, one at an obsolete parts vendor.

Obsolete parts are hard to find...if you snooze...you loose.

1. Don't know what the cost difference is but I'd spring for a good one.

2. It all depends on wether it is latching on the first click or the second. If it is only latching on the first click the striker needs to be moved out. Vice versa if it is catching on the second click.

3. Is the brake pedal releasing from the brake light switch?

1) It's $30 I think...so not killer.

2) First latch...thanks, I'll go fix it in a little while

3) Yes it is releasing...I had this problem but a little more severe in Red...After a few minutes it seemed the pedal drooped and the brake lights would be on...but now in the Bronco, the flashers came on, and after about five minutes they went to solid...but the brake lights are not coming on. After I realized this in the Bronco, I'd stop and turn the flashers on and the same thing would happen.

I was being sarcastic.

Not a parts store replacement either.

I got it at a truck stop--where all the "fancy" parts can be found.
OK, you bought it at at truck stop...but autoparts stores have sold antennas like this for decades.

And I oughtta know, 'cuz I've been around for over 6 decades, and have bought tons of obsolete parts from Ford dealers and autoparts stores since the 1960's.

I got one of them springy antennas on my 72. I snagged it on a tree and it did its job the way it shouldve so Im happy. My 76 dont have one and dad caught that one on a pine tree branch and it broke it clean off down to the stub. It still gets great reception though.

What the hell does cruise control have to do with the antenna?

Hey Dennis...I seem to remember someone yelling at peeps when they offered parts for sale in threads on t'other site....sayin' that was against the FT* guidelines.

You wouldn't happen to know who that was by any chance...now would you?

If you aren't sure who I'm refering to...there's an EZ way to find out.

Look in a mirror...there you is! :rotz:

btw: To y'all...Dennis and I are pals...at least we were till I typed this post!

Seemed to miss that cruise control question Dennis...but no I don't and IIRC, yours is a 460 unit right? That won't work for a 351M or 400 will it...or does it matter?

The bracket that mounts the C/C's servo to the intake manifold is 351M/400 specific as is the bracket where the servo's chain mounts to the carb linkage.

The servo itself (D6UZ9C735A) is the same.

The servo and the ampflier (D4AZ9E731B)...the parts that usually go bad, are the same as many of the 1970's, some '80's passenger cars, 1976/91 Econolines.

The cruise (speed control) question is because most people don't realize that with cruise the brake light switch is located on the end of the push rod (and over time they fail)

BrakeLightSwitchwcruise.jpg

and the cruise shut off switch is the POP out switch on the pedal.

Antennae have nothing to do with the cruise Bill. unless you have a raccoon tail on it ;)

Mucho grass amigo :)

Uh...which brake (stop) light switch (with or without cruise) after 1966 didn't mount this way?

None.

To enable fellow members to see how the switch mounts to the BRAKE PEDAL & how the pushrod mounts INTO the switch, post this parts catalog illustration:

Section 97.1 / Page 2, lower diagram.
