If replacing an injector, there is a 10 digit IQA number. This number must be programmed into the pcm for proper engine operation. Each injector must be ordered for the particular cylinder its being installed in.

Any idea why it's this way? Is it to prevent people doing what I did?

Each injector has its own individual flow rate. That is denoted with the IQA number. You program this into the pcm, and the pcm can tell how much fuel is being injected more precisely. And at this point, Its going to be very difficult for anyone to do anything "aftermarket" to this engine.

So, do they make different cylinders utilize different flow rates, or it's just a way of being more precise in the amount of fuel injected for control purposes? Kinda like a way to control the EGT's by not letting one cylinder burn hotter than another?

Its just being more precise.
