Automatic with a 5.4. A high pitched whining/whirring sound upon acceleration from a stop, varies with engine rpm.
Any ideas?

Try removing the belt and see if it goes away.

Thanks Vince, I will suggest that. I should have also mentioned that the owner (a friend) had it in at the dealer and they had fired off a inquiry to Ford as they couldn't determine the cause.

That would eliminate all belt driven accessories. Then you can move on to a possible "powerglide" noise (remember those?)

That is exactly the sound.

Just checked........nothing in ssms or tsbs.

Probably why the dealer here sent an inquirey off to Ford...thanks for looking.

I've done a few with the #9 torrington bearing going bad, but it is speed related.
