Automatic with a 5.4. A high pitched whining/whirring sound upon acceleration from a stop, varies with engine rpm.
Any ideas?

Try removing the belt and see if it goes away.

Thanks Vince, I will suggest that. I should have also mentioned that the owner (a friend) had it in at the dealer and they had fired off a inquiry to Ford as they couldn't determine the cause.

That would eliminate all belt driven accessories. Then you can move on to a possible "powerglide" noise (remember those?)

Probably why the dealer here sent an inquirey off to Ford...thanks for looking.
