97 150 should have the first of the modular engines. Should either have the 4.6 of 5.4 Tritons, and I know there was a V6, but I dunno how big.

4.2 L V6 was the size of the v6... just an upsized updated 3.8 pretty much...

to the original poster... only way it would be a 302 is if it was swapped in... it should be a 4.2 V6, 4.6 V8, or 5.4 V8...

i personally would steer clear of 97-03 just not the greatest years for the modular v8's for a few reasons...

4.6 is about a 289ci motor
5.4 is about a 330ci motor

The mod motor was introduced to the F150s in 97. They are good motors, all in all. I have blown up about 8 now( I lost count LOL). 5 of them were my fault, 3 were my fault for not having more knowledge about them before attempting service work.

The 97-03 stylings were introduced in January '96 along side the previous years' models. But from the beginning they were offered only with th 5.4, 4.6 or the 4.2. I don't know much about these trucks but I would HIGHLY doubt there is a 302 in it, and if someone put a 302 in it, I would steer CLEAR of that P.O.S.

Given the complexity of OBDII, among other things, I seriously doubt anyone would bother with the time, trouble, and expense of undertaking a swap like that. Oddly, the 4.6 proved to be the most durable/reliable of the three motors first offered in '97.

i wouldnt say a 302 swapped in would be a POS... just not the best combo...

and the 4.6, i have mixed feelings on.. i have a buddy that has had 3 in his truck, all three have blown head gaskets before 100k miles, spit out spark plugs all before 75k miles...

now i know that that aint all 4.6's, just i have bad experiences around them...

Nothing wrong with those engines. I'd say the gen 11 stuff had bigger issues!
