workin on a guy's s10 blazer with him... It wouldn't idle at all. to keep it running, you had to keep the gas pedal down a little so it would run at 1200 rpm or higher. Had code p1406 which is EGR so pulled the egr, sre enough it was stuck open. cleaned it, and it ran like 100 bucks. ok 99... it a chevy. took it out and drove it a little, drove it hard trying to see what it'll do. got back in the driveway and it died... try to start it... nothing. give it some gas, and runs only above 1200 rpm again. No codes, but figred the egr is stuck again or something. its not. took out the idle air control and cleaned it off. still the same thing. I'm pretty damn stumped on this one... we sat there with it at 12-1500 rpm to let it warm up again to see if it would throw any codes and it hasn't...

Any ideas? aside from an Explorer...

EDIT: fat finger... it's a 1995, not a 1996.

BTW: it still runs like 99 bucks as long as you don't let it go nder 1000 rpm. if so it just dies out...

Friend of mine had a GMC Jimmy (S-10 size) in college. I think it was a '96. High, hard miles.

Ran like poo, especially at idle. Seldom died that I can recall, but I think he used to have to kinda help it stay running at stoplights (neutral and add add a little throttle).

If memory serves, he improved it a lot (still ran like the junker it was) by adjusting the timing- I think in his case, he figured out that somebody before him had messed with it and done it wrong. (The wire you unhook to get a reading was never hooked back up? Or never unhooked by the previous guy prior to setting time? Something like that.)

Damn thing still wont set a code, so I'm kinda stumped... Unplugged the Idle air control and it's the same symptoms... From what I read, if IAC was bad, it should run with it unplugged, and it doesn't...

Good idea on the timing, but checked that out and it all seems right...

runs fine now down to an idle as long as you keep your foot onthe gas... if you let off it can't hold an idle by it's self...

I am having the exact same problem. I have a 2001 s-10 4.3L it will run perfect as long as I am moving but it will die at idle. So i hope we can figure this out. I replaced my fuel pump and filter and it did not do anything.

I went to the Blazer forum and bothered them about it and got an answer.

The fuel delivery system inside the manifold on the Vortec engine leaks notoriously. You have pressure and return lines (called the "nut kit" ) the main injector, the Spider, and the regulator, any of which can leak. On mine, it turns out to be the regulator.

You guys can remove this if you don't feel it's appropriate, but I found the best place for S-Blazer info on the web seems to be BlazerForum.com. I would reccomend looking on their site.

Still sounds like a vacuum leak, won't idle but does just fine when on the throttle...
