1975 F250 4x4 rear brakes & axle bearings

Hey everybody, I'm needing a little info on the rear axle on my truck. What kind of lube goes in the rear wheel bearings? Are they an oil bath bearing or should they be packed with bearing grease? Also my truck has inboard drums & I was wanting to know if there was a way I could convert it to an outboard drum set up. Taking the hub off to do brakes is a big pain. If anybody can give me some info on this I'd sure appreciate it.

F250's have two rear wheel bearings and races per side, located on the inside and outside of the hub.

These bearings are lubricated by the rear axles (90 weight) gear oil.

There are two lock nuts per side, with a lock ring in between. The lock ring has tabs on it, that are bent over onto the inner/outer lock nuts...once they're adjusted.

There's no such thing as inboard rear brake drums...unless you have a Jaguar, Citroen, or some other foreign rolling pile of miseries.

lol Nice to see Bill posting again.

He's completely right of course. When I did my rears, it was because there was a terrible grinding noise coming from one of the drums. I had a hunch what it was and yep, was proven right, when I pulled the drum and it pretty much fell off in my hands along with what was left of the bearings/race. It looked like there had not been any lube on that bearing for quite some time. The round parts were square and the inner race had fused itself to the hub assembly lol. It took me a good 2 weeks (what with work and school keeping me busy) to get her going again.

When I put her back together, I went ahead and packed the bearings with grease anyway.

The only thing I can tell you to make rear brakes easier on these 3/4 to 1 ton rigs, is to convert them to disc...I know I plan to.
