More progress today, went and picked up the hub socket. Found out later that I also needed another special tool to remove the nut that is on the upper ball joint, should have that tomorrow, parts place didn't have one but is bringing one in. No surprises in the hubs, bearings are Timken and show a little bit of wear.

Removed the hub:

Then another nut removed:

After that, popped the hub/rotor off:

Took the nuts off the knuckle studs and used a deadblow to loosen things:

Top ball joint nut 1-5/16, I used a 3/4'' drive very easy to remove:

Bottom was 1 1/8", easy again with that much leverage:

Here is where the other special socket is needed..upper ball joint:

Little bit of wear on the rollers:

I will measure the steering stop bolts before removal:

Not sure how I am going to blast the splashshield well enough to powder coat, might have to drill out the spotwelds and seperate:

Should have the ball joints out tomorrow and possibly the box off if I can summon the bodies :D

I see that pulling a D44 straight axle apart isn't much different than pulling apart a D44 TTB.

Cool pics Duncan. Makes me wanna go work on my D44. But college comes first.

Thanks Shaun, it was pretty straightforward, the last time I worked on one of these was probably 25+ years ago...the only thing that got me was that upper ball joint nut below the castellated nut. Don't think I will bother with the ring and pinion until I get the housing off the suspension.

I had a similar problem with the Camber adjusters on my ball joints. I wasn't sure how to get them off. Eventually got it though.:)

Can't wait to see some more progress!

Duncan are you presoaking stuff with any kind of penetrating oil before hand?

Haven't needed to at all so far..no rust and threads greased. The top ball joint nuts that require that special tool, I did just put some liquid wrench on them because they look a bit rusted.

Lets hope you don't.

There isn't much left that I can think of...shackle/spring nuts/bolts look good...pinion nut maybe, but I have a good sized impact gun. Gas tank bolts look ok..time will tell I guess.
Time consuming is going to be replacing all the nuts/bolts with zinc plated ones!

After much researching and calls, I have decided to go with Edge converters.
The owner (Andre) seems decent and knowlegeable.
Going to get:
Converter
Shift kit
R code servo
Different clutch bands
2.72/1.54 planetary set
Deep pan
Modulator...coz I think I damaged mine during removal.
The engine builder and myself will do the transmission.

Edit...btw Sean...bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

Yes it is. I had replaced every single bolt including all the the crossmember rivets with bolts and I think I worked on it day and night for quite a while. Worth it though.

What grade of bolt did you use for replacing the rivits?...I am looking at zinc plated grade 8's.
